It was a privilege to be able to experience Illuminate’s NAIDOC week opening event with Yothu Yindi, and ARIA nominated Australian artist Emma Donovan.
With Yothu Yindi’s biggest hit released over 25 years ago, you can still feel the momentum and engagement from the crowd in the evolving form of the band and the message they have for the world.
Emma Donovan’s enthralling voice and country-soul-driven performance started the night with stories from her own life, driving her performance and connection to country and the audience. A special mention was to Archie Roach and his one year since passing, Emma called upon the audience to reflect and remember those with such a strong voice in the music world.
The evening was an uplifting, joyful event that saw a diverse audience come together to celebrate NAIDOC and what the future may hold. Strong vocals and elegant harmonies led the lineup throughout the performance, with First Nations traditions present throughout the show with traditional instruments and a showcasing of digeridoo and dance performances.
There were feelings of hope and positivity within the large audience, with the band finishing the show with their well-known hit ‘Treaty’ the crowd were enraptured by the performance, It was a special moment to be able to see the song performed live, and surrounded by a crowd that was unified in celebrating the future but also reflecting on the past.
