Dead Dads Club to lift spirits this Adelaide Fringe

There’s a club called the Dead Dads Club – you’re not on it until you’re in it.

The concept came about when original cast member and Walk of Fame nominee Jason Chong and local comedian Eliza Thomas were talking about being in the club, and how we don’t really talk about death a lot in Australia.

Once the funeral is over, death is rarely talked about. Which makes it even more confronting when it happens. When you join the club, a pre-existing member of the club will approach you and say the words “There’s a Club called the Dead Dads Club… I’m sorry you had to join the club”, it doesn’t really get mentioned much after that.

This is not Fight Club; you’re allowed to talk about this one. This show came about by the two comedians using their existing skill set to raise the topic, not so much to give advice, but rather to share information and stories.

The concept of ‘The Club’ potentially helps, potentially heals, and can be processed either way. Together, Jason and Eliza weren’t entirely sure what the club needed them to do, but they knew they could do something, and doing something seemed better than doing nothing.

Something about talking about it as a way to help process it, ‘laughter at something can reduce the amount of power grief has over you’.

This show is an emotional rollercoaster of dark humour.

As Eliza commented – ‘It’s heavy, really heavy, but we know our target audience has been through worse.’

The cast is a multi-award winning multi-national lineup of seasoned comedians. With over half a century’s worth of comedy experience between them
