Theatre Review 2024: Starweaver

Starweaver is a thought-provoking and all-immersive experience. The play encourages the audience to think about the fabric of life and the beauty and challenges of what it means to be human. It’s a deep exploration of humanity’s past, present, and future from all angles. The living experience is mirrored in Starweaver by what we are challenged with today: protecting the environment and building community, family, and relationships. Poising the question, what in life is worth fighting for?

‘What’s the use of living if you have nothing to live for?’

Actors Ellen Graham and Jamie Hornsby from Madness of Two Theatre Company immediately captivated the audience with their immersive use of sound and imagery and their powerful acting skills. The journey of Cato (played by Ellen Graham), an AI engineer turned revolutionary, is compelling; she is lured into following Jamie Hornsby’s mysterious and devious character, Cassius, as he opens her world of connection and comradery. Maeve Hook’s portrayal of Terr, a strong and fearless community leader, was also particularly noteworthy.

This play offers its audience an immersive experience that allows your imagination to soar. The screen arcs wrap around the stage, enveloping the audience using CGI, motion capture, and video game technology. Coupled with the captivating lighting, sound, and imagery, Starweaver draws you into a futuristic dystopian world. Being part of the audience is not for the faint-hearted, as strobes, sound and lights whip around you in fast-paced protest and fight scenes.

As a hesitant audience member of anything sci-fi, I was blown away by the actors’ creative and engaging storyline, passion, professionalism, and the interweaving of technology within the play’s presentation; Starweaver is a new way to experience theatre.
