On a wintery midweek night, tucked away in the intimate space of The Warehouse Theatre in Unley, Greek goddess Medusa shared her tips in the Cabaret Fringe show “Medusa: A Guide to Modern Dating”.
Bursting onto the stage complete with hair full of snakes, Medusa breaks into a serpentine rendition of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s hit single “WAP”. The rap is updated with lyrics befitting the host for the evening and aptly renamed “VAP” (vipers and pythons).
Medusa interspersed the songs throughout the show with a narrative focussed on her own trials and tribulations in the dating scene and introduced her top three tips learn over her thousand years of existence.
The references to the classic tale of Medusa and her unfortunate encounters with Poseidon, who put the curse upon her and Perseus, who vanquished her, are clever and bring insight to the light humour.
Audience participation brings laughs in the form of a dating show game, with the contestants winning a date with the goddess through questions and grape throwing.
Song highlights include Disney’s The Little Mermaid villain theme song “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and closer Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” that had the cabaret tables up and dancing.
It was an enjoyable follow-up from Erinn Jade’s run at this year’s Adelaide Fringe that showed an endearing side to one of Greek mythology’s misunderstood characters.
