Illuminate Review – Unsound Adelaide 2023

Unsound is for the music lover, the destructor of tradition and the cultural explorer. The festival seeks to delve into pockets of sound and visual art that juxtapose light and dark.

Curated by Mat Schulz and Gosia Plysa the audience embraced the intricacy and passion of the artists performing on stage; not only were the artists clearly dedicated to their craft, but the engaged and focused audience followed the waves of musicians and artists that performed throughout the weekend, and the interaction between the two was a special thing to witness.

From elegant otherworldly, enigmatic artists such as Sofie Birch and Antonina Nowacka who graced the audience with enrapturing elegant vocals, and Guatemalan cellist, vocalist, and composer Mabe Fratti delivered a performance that was a crowd favourite, using the cello to project sounds from the heavy to pop like. A stark contrast, Divide//Dissolve from Melbourne conveyed their message to destroy white supremacy through instrumental music that is heavy and pummeled and shook throughout the Dom Polski Centre.

Another crowd favourite, Robin Fox’s, Friday night performance showcased why he is named the ‘king of lasers,’ the ability to connect the sound and lighting scape together had the crowd in awe as lasers flittered and jumped over the audience’s heads.

The quality of programming, tech and immersive nature of the acts were of the highest quality.

The quaintness of the Dom Polski Centre as a festival venue was well chosen; the additional touches of traditional Polish Food, Vodka and Beer on offer made more for the festival experience. This was a celebration of ten years of Unsound landing in Adelaide, and I think many people agree that we hope to see at least another ten years.
