Community thrives when arts survive: A Brunch of Songs serves up support & creative camaraderie

Throughout the month of October, a bunch of artists have been offering a deliciously creative event where supporting local artists, gathering community, and embracing arts is on the menu.

Every Tuesday morning this month at The Jade, A Brunch of Songs has featured all things artsy, with an aim to put emerging artists on display and make the arts more accessible.

Quentin Brown (Quinn), a final-year uni student and spoken-word poet, has been working with producer Emma Knights to host the event that works on a ‘pay-what-you-can’ system and showcases artists from various backgrounds and disciplines.

“I have been lucky enough to take over A Brunch of Songs for my internship this year,” Quinn says. “We are showcasing spoken-word poets, drag artists, comedy artists, and musicians as well.”

Emma and the team have been championing the event to make art more accessible, showcase local talent, and keep the community together after the difficult times we collectively experienced with COVID.

“I really love the community aspect of it: the opportunity to be able to showcase local artists and all their strengths, and bring together an audience from all different backgrounds to find joy together in art and artistic creation,” Quinn says. “I think especially during COVID, we all learnt how important the arts are for mental well-being.”

The next event is Tuesday 24 October at 10.30am – 11.30am and will proudly showcase emerging drag royalty Peregrinn Frown and Gothica V Horror alongside the comedy stylings of Cecilia Ronson.

Hosted at The Jade, one of Adelaide’s favourite arts venues, A Brunch of Songs allows for the development of positive connections in a safe space for creatives and audiences.

“It’s really lovely to see everyone connecting in that space, getting along, and enjoying art together,” Quinn says. “My goal is to continue showing local performers from marginalised backgrounds and creating safe spaces for people to engage in art.”

In the final week of Quinn’s hosting – Tuesday, October 31, audiences can expect musical excellence with local jazz performer Shyla Van Dok and show tunes by Liliana Carletti.

Community thrives through access to the arts, and creatives thrive through access to their community – rallying around your local emerging artists helps everyone in the long run, so grab your tickets now and get behind your local arts scene.
