As the first of the ‘Live @ the Lab’ series, the collaborative team at Illuminate and Ila exceeded their brief in showcasing – a testament to talent, artistry and, above all, good times – my mind, and ears are blown.
The Melbourne outfit ‘The Night Terrors’ instantly captivated the audience. The band, a tight-knit powerhouse, promised a journey from their newer, ethereal tracks leaning into heavier as the night progressed, and they delivered. The audience was taken on a musical journey, from lively synth beats to deeper tracks led by bass and organ, leaving everyone in awe of their versatility and skill.
Enveloped by The Lab’s well-known sound and lighting scapes, which surrounded both bands, from local visual artists Dave Court and Rusted Chroma, added to the performance pieces, watching the musicianship and lead man, Miles Brown, play the Theremin and Sarah Lim’s precision on the keys, the band’s ability to unleash their dark synth magic was a joy to watch,
It was obvious from the moment Carla Lippis and a band of Adelaide Music Royalty graced the stage, that you had landed in a Mondo Psycho world and you were visiting.
Lead singer Cala Lippis, a true Queen of the night, captivated the audience from the moment she appeared. The band’s tight-knit performance was so engrossing it felt like you couldn’t cut through it with a knife.
This was not just a music performance, it was a show, a story, a cabaret, a heavy gig, an eruptive performance. The band’s energy, grit, and wild expression, combined with their melodious synths, grinding guitars, and powerful vocals, left a lasting impact on the audience.
