St. ALi Italian Film Festival returns to Palace Cinemas this October.

Ciao, Adelaide film lovers! It’s that magical time of year when the St. ALi Italian Film Festival returns to our beautiful city, bringing a taste of Italy right to our doorstep. From October 2 to October 22, Palace Nova Eastend and Palace Nova Prospect Cinemas will transform into a paradise for cinema enthusiasts with a lineup of Italian films that promise to make you laugh, cry, and maybe even dance a little in your seat. And this year, the festival is extra special as it celebrates its 25th anniversary with a fabulous mix of movies that will have you dreaming of la dolce vita.

Kicking off the festival with a burst of energy is “GLORIA!”. It’s the directorial debut of Italian pop star Margherita Vicario, and she’s bringing her signature flair to the big screen. Set in the enchanting city of Venice, the film follows a maid who discovers her hidden musical talents and inspires a revolution. It’s a fun, uplifting story that’s sure to set the tone for the rest of the festival. While Margherita herself will be at the opening events in Sydney and Melbourne, we’ll be celebrating in style here in Adelaide.

One of the festival’s most anticipated films is “PARTHENOPE,” directed by Paolo Sorrentino, the visionary behind The Great Beauty. This decades-spanning romantic drama takes us on a journey through the life of a Neapolitan woman, offering a feast for the eyes and ears with stunning cinematography and an evocative score. It’s the kind of film that sweeps you off your feet and leaves you dreaming of Italy long after the credits roll.

And then there’s “CONCLAVE,” the perfect film to close out the festival. This gripping thriller, featuring powerhouse performances from Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, takes us deep into the Vatican as the Cardinals gather to elect a new Pope. With its high-stakes drama and a plot full of twists and turns, it’s a film that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

But the festival isn’t just about new releases; it’s also about celebrating the classics. This year, we’re marking the 50th anniversary of “THE GODFATHER PART II” with a stunning 4K restoration. It’s a rare chance to see this iconic film on the big screen again, whether you’re a longtime fan or experiencing it for the first time. And for a touch of nostalgia, “BREAD AND TULIPS,” the film that kicked off the first Italian Film Festival back in 2000, is making a comeback. It’s like reconnecting with an old friend and remembering why you fell in love with Italian cinema in the first place.

Of course, the festival has something for everyone. If you love a good psychological thriller, “TRUST” will keep you guessing with its dark secrets and a haunting score by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. For those who prefer a more heartfelt drama, “MIA” tells the touching story of a father and his teenage daughter navigating life’s challenges. And if you’re in the mood for a good laugh, “A WORLD APART” and “LIFE’S A BEACH” are sure to deliver with their hilarious takes on Italian life and culture.

Don’t forget to bring the whole family! “THE WAR OF THE NONNI” is a delightful comedy about two grandfathers competing for their grandchildren’s affection, while “BAD CONSCIENCE” offers a whimsical look at the battle between passion and reason in a romantic comedy that’s both playful and thought-provoking.

The St. ALi Italian Film Festival is more than just a collection of films—it’s a celebration of Italian culture. With its diverse lineup, the festival invites you to explore Italy’s rich stories, stunning landscapes, and vibrant characters, all without leaving Adelaide.
