I couldn’t help but wonder…. what improv show to see at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival?
The ladies of Six and The City give us a fully improvised show that is carried by the chemistry of its cast and they’re off the cuff sense of style and humour.
If you’re someone who’s experienced the many displeasures of modern dating – this might be the show for you. Six and The City is an improve show that aspires to alleviate its audience from the disappointing (and often times disturbing) nature of today’s world of dating through humour and satire.
As the author Madeleine L’Engle once said, “A good laugh heals a lot of hurts” and Six and The City’s portrayal of our everyday dating disasters offers its audience some much needed comedic relief.
If you’re expecting this show to be a homage to “Sex and The City” and you’re big fan of the show much like myself…. well, you might be a bit disappointed. Whilst there were the odd references here and there – on this particular night there were probably more Kath and Kim references but given Six and The City is all improvisation – no two shows will be alike!
Six in The City is actually much less about the TV Show and much more about navigating the troubled waters of modern dating. This improv troupe of ladies playfully take shots at some of the cliché characters you might find on your dating apps.
There were some big belly laughs from the audience as the portrayal of today’s dating stereotypes hit perhaps a little too close to home.
The flashy guy, the handyman or the guy who doesn’t call you back – all the many different personas these women portrayed were with a comedic styling that married tongue in cheek with razor-sharp wit.
As an audience member – you felt like you were part of the performance. Showgoers were encouraged to weigh in on certain scenarios which made you feel as though you too were part of the improv!
Whilst there was a little bit of disappointment in thinking Six and The City was going to be more “Sex and The City” – the audience was in fits of laughter, nonetheless.
If improv is your thing – Six and The City is certainly worth checking out!
4 Stars.
