Phi Theodoros takes Depression The Musical on a regional tour of SA this week.

Depression The Musical is a  Cabaret which tells real stories of depression and anxiety through popular music and rhythmic monologues.

The show, written and performed by Phi Theodoros was  inspired by interviews with South Australians living with mental illness and Theodoros’ personal experience with an ex-lover who took his own life.

With the motivation for the show to open up conversations through story and song, Theodoros said Depression The Musical is about bridging the gap of understanding and empathy for those who have never experienced what it’s like to be followed by the “Black Dog”.

The musical is currently touring regional areas of South Australia for Mental Health Week 2014 to raise awareness and encourage people to find ways of talking about mental health issues without discomfort.

Taking the show to regional communities is something Theodoros believes is beneficial to raising awareness about the subject of depression and anxiety, as well as sharing stories to give support to people living with mental health issues.

“I’m passionate about building engaged, supportive communities, and by touring this show to communities outside of the Adelaide Metropolitan area, the band and I aim to spread new hope and new light on conversations which are otherwise avoided,” she said.

Incorporating themes of self-worth, loneliness, grief, suicide, hope and connection, Depression The Musical was first performed in 2013 at Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival and was met with some excellent reviews.

The music includes songs by popular artists, The Doors, Tori Amos, P!nk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Lee, A Perfect Circle, The Divinyls, Radiohead and more.

Depression The Musical on tour begins Friday 10th October at The Cheese Factory Studio Gallery in Meadows and the Port Noarlunga Arts Centre on Saturday 11th October.

But if you’re in Adelaide’s CBD and want to catch a show, never fear; Phi and her band, The Hollowmen will be performing the show at The Soul Box on Sunday 12th October. Shows start at 8pm and tickets can be booked through Eventbrite.
