We hadn’t heard a lot from Daniel Johns for the past eight years until the recent release of his EP Aerial Love.

A completely different offering from the enigmatic singer, Aerial Love gave fans the impression Johns was shape-shifting and morphing into a new act altogether.

New single ‘Cool on Fire’ from Johns’ forthcoming album Talk can confirm that the Silverchair front man is doing things a little differently these days.

Using electronic and falsetto tones, Johns is barely recognisable, but this complete musical change could earn him an entirely new legion of fans.

Talk bids farewell to the big guitars and roaring rock vocals and replaces them with urban beats and lush R’n’B.

Asked to explain this Bowie-esque genre hopping, Johns says, “Music’s the best way I know to express how I think and feel, but over time you don’t think and feel all the same things in the same ways; so the music has to change.”

Throughout the years, Johns has reinvented himself and his music, so Talk isn’t as much of a shock as it is an adjustment, which his fans may or may not invest in.

And as the man himself says, “That was part of why I picked the album title. I don’t really care what most people think. Let them talk.”
