FRINGE REVIEW: MARY’S DIVA SPECTACULAR! MARY’S POPPIN, FEBRUARY 2017

If you’re looking for a fun night out, Mary’s Diva Spectacular is a great way to get your night kick-started. Hosted by Karen From Finance, a bevy of office gals pay tribute to Mary From Accounts who had an unfortunate accident with a paper shredder.

Staged at Mary’s Poppin on Synagogue Place, you’re whisked away into a world of glitz and glamour as the girls give renditions of diva classics.

Keeping with the theme of working girls, Dolly Parton in drag gave us “9 to 5” to begin. The costume was great, the hair and makeup superb, but the performance was a little dull.

Luckily it was a slight misstep in what turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable show. There were flashes of brilliance in the form of Cyndi Lauper and Liza Minnelli, impersonations crafted so perfectly it would be easy to mistake them from the real thing.

Hilarious parodies of Adele and Shania Twain had the crowd in fits. Picture a leopard-print clad Shania circa the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” film clip and you’re halfway there. Whitney Houston and Tina Turner also make comic appearances.

Miming to the classic songbirds is a cliché used by drag queens the world over but it’s a formula that works so well it’s hard not to enjoy yourself.

So grab your girlfriends (or your mates) and get over and see this thoroughly entertaining show. Mary’s Diva Spectacular is showing until March 18. Get your tickets HERE
