The Cabaret Fringe Festival kicked off on Friday with its annual opening night gala at the German Club, hosted by this year’s festival director Jennifer Kingwell. If this evening was anything to go by, there’s a little bit of something for everyone at this year’s festival.
The Adelaide Big Band had the honour of opening with Kingwell, then closing it with the smooth vocals of Bill Parton, playing contemporary classics arranged to fit with each performer’s style. This contrasted with such highlights as the beautiful harmonies of acapella choir Allegria After Dark, the gorgeous over-the-top drag queens of Molly’s Game, and the theatrical stylings of this year’s festival ambassador, Pamela Shaw.
With a number of local performers on this year’s schedule, the Fringe Cabaret Festival is a great opportunity to leave the cosy confines of your house to see some new and unheralded talent. Get on it – there’s guaranteed to be something you’ll enjoy!
The Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival runs from the 1st – 24th of June. Schedule and tickets are available from www.cabaretfringefestival.com
