Those of us who are old enough to remember those heady days of the first wave of British punk will feel a warm rush of joy at the news that Stiff Records stalwart and indie rock favourite, Wreckless Eric is making his way back to Australia for the first time since 1980. And now a whole new legion of fans will have the opportunity to check out this British legend in the flesh when he performs at The Gov on November 14.
As one of the original acts on the Stiff Records roster – along with Ian Dury, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello – he enjoyed success immediately with his very first recording, Whole Wide World, which decades later made its way into Mojo magazine’s Top 40 Punk Singles of All Time.
The acclaimed underground songwriter will be performing many of his solo classics such as Hit & Run Judy, Reconnez Cherie, Semaphore Signals and A Pop Song, as well as material recorded with his garage band, The Len Bright Combo, and from the albums he has released with his partner, Amy Rigby. He will also be highlighting material from his latest release, 2018’s Construction Time & Demolition.
Wreckless Eric’s songs have found their way into the repertoire of many discerning performers and have been covered by a raft of iconic acts such as The Monkees, our own Mental As Anything and Cage The Elephant, as well as being performed by American indie rock gods, Green Day and The Replacements. It is not an overstatement to say that a whole new generation of musicians have found inspiration in the songs of this revered English performer.
These November shows will be a completely solo affair, with Wreckless Eric accompanying himself on acoustic and electric guitars. To quote his website – Onstage he hides behind nothing, he tells the truth with big open chords, lilting enchantment, squalls of feedback, dissonance, bizarre stories and backchat.
Wreckless Eric refuses to declare this tour a comeback, for the simple reason that he never went away!
‘He won’t recreate 1978 for you, he’ll blow your mind instead…’
