Pridevember is here and to celebrate, annual LGBTIQA+ arts festival Feast kicks off.
And this year, legendary, award winning performer Kym ‘Kymbo’ Mackenzie will make an appearance, ready to show off the third volume of his ‘Kym’s Extravaganza’ series.
‘Kym’s Overall Extravaganza Showcase Vol. 3’ will play one show only at My Lover Cindy on Friday the 3rd of November at 6pm.
But Kym is no stranger to the stage with his first performance 31 years ago, inspired by a friend.
“I wanted to become a performer when I went to see my friend perform as Steptoe and Son. I’ve been performing for 31 years,” Kym says.
Kym’s show is a powerful performance showcasing his life experiences since childhood about not only growing up and living with disability, but also working in the arts industry and performing with disability.
Kym says dance numbers, like the one he choreographed to ‘This Is Me’ from The Greatest Showman gives the audience a look into who Kym he is now and what he stands for.
The message of the show is people with disabilities are capable of great things, and that anyone, not just neurotypical people, can make it on a stage in front of hundreds if not thousands.
“My dream is to inspire people and make them feel proud of what people with a disability can achieve,” he says.
Kym has worked at Bedford Industries, a disability support group, for just over 44 years, though he now has some big news to share.
“Next year will be my 45th year [at Bedford Industries], and at the end of next year I will be retiring,” he says.
While this is a big event for Kym, this also could mean that he’ll be putting more time and energy into his arts career, already having plans for the future of his arts career.
“I had a bit of the retirement story in the Fringe show…but I took it out because it wasn’t relevant, but I’m going to bring it back in 2025.”
With plans for the future already in place, it’s clear that Kym is ready for big things to come in his performing career, but for now, there’s no time like the present to buy tickets for ‘Kym’s Overall Extravaganza Showcase Volume 3’ and experience a truly extraordinary show.
