Adelaide Fringe Review 2024: Vaudeville Smash

The shining stars of disco–funk have returned to Adelaide Fringe yet again to wiggle and strut their way into Adelaide’s hearts in the Wonderland Spiegeltent. This band serves its audience a disco collision of synth and funk and energy and enthusiasm that resembles a hero’s return to the stage.

Vaudeville Smash has carved its own niche in the Australian music scene, made up of three brothers – Marc Lucchesi, impressively leading the band on vocals, dance moves, flute and saxophone; Dan Lucchesi, holding his own with never-ending energy, surprisingly strong, elegant vocals and drums, and Luca Lucchesi, on bass and backup vocals holding out the solid rhythm section. James Bowers joined the brothers on keys who performed the most unique and enjoyable cover of Pony by Ginuwine I have seen; Steve on percussion, who gave a solid and energising percussion set as the band yelled STEEEEEEVE; and Ash Griffin on guitar, when soloing pushed forward on the stage by Marc, Ash held his own as he matched the talent of the three brothers.

There is so much energy and talent on the Wonderland stage; the lead singer’s ability to whip out saxophone and transfer back through to flute to vocals and back again to dance moves would match Taylor Swift’s apparent workout of three hours on the treadmill. The incredible talent of the artists is not lost on the audience, a fifth-year back for Fringe Festival and a nearly-full show on the last Sunday of the Fringe Festival this band has a cult following – and I think I just joined.
