FRINGE REVIEWVAUDEVILLE SMASH, WONDERLAND SPIEGELTENT, 2024

The opulence of the Wonderland Spiegeltent was the ideal setting for the return of the raucous, sparkling, high-energy performance of disco-funk favourites, Vaudeville Smash, who have been delighting audiences across Australia since 2009. Arguably the greatest Adelaide exports since the Hills Hoist, brothers Marc, Dan, and Luca Lucchesi, joined by friends James Bowers and Ash Griffin, with a special appearance on percussion by Simon Marafioti, transported the audience to a world of infectious melodies and unparalleled talent, with a soupçon of unadulterated chaos and a lot of fun.

From the moment the boys took the stage, the energy was palpable, setting the tone for an unforgettable 90-odd minutes of pure joy and entertainment. Vaudeville Smash’s eclectic mix of pop, funk, and disco styles creates a dynamic sound that transcends genres and delights every age. The band’s musicianship is exceptional, with Marc showcasing his incredible vocals intermixed with the flute and saxophone, and every member’s passion for their craft and the performance evident throughout the show. One of the standout aspects of a Vaudeville Smash show is the band’s stage presence and charisma. Their infectious enthusiasm and genuine love for performing shone through, creating a vibrant atmosphere that seeped through the Spiegeltent on a balmy Adelaide night.

From the smooth grooves of Dangerous to the delightful absurdity of Banana Man, and fan favourite Devil Said, fans were treated to Vaudeville Smash classics and, blessedly, two brand-new tracks from their forthcoming album, Miami, slated for release in April 2024. Hopefully, this means there will be another visit in the not-too-distant future, as a year is a long time between drinks and synchronised dance moves. From gorgeous melodies to intricate instrumentals, Vaudeville Smash delivered an energetic, magnetic performance that kept the audience engaged and delighted from start to finish. Whether you’re a longtime fan or experiencing Vaudeville Smash for the first time, attending one of their gigs is a must for music lovers looking for a memorable and immersive live music experience. A stellar performance from start to finish; come back soon, boys.
