Adelaide Fringe Review: 90 Day Comedian – Dalin Oliver, The Griffins Hotel, 2026

90 Day Comedian by Dalin Oliver is a warm, engaging stand-up show filled with hilarious anecdotes and enough cultural insight to leave audiences feeling like they’ve gained a few brain cells rather than lost them.

Oliver’s storytelling is effortless, and his ability to read and manage a crowd is impressive. When he mentions he began his career as a teacher, it suddenly makes perfect sense. His natural rapport allows him to connect equally well with a 12-year-old audience member and someone in their seventies, tailoring the experience in a way that feels inclusive and relaxed.

Much of the show draws on Oliver’s experiences growing up in South Africa. For those of us who might realise our knowledge of the country is embarrassingly limited, Oliver wittily fills in the gaps. He acknowledges the stereotypes people often raise — particularly around crime — but approaches them with humour and affection rather than alarm. His love for his country shines through as he shares stories about its people, languages and culture, creating a performance that feels both personal and insightful.

Oliver doesn’t rely on crude jokes, profanity or shock value. Instead, the humour comes from clever observations, cultural nuances and the shared experience of navigating different perspectives. While there is some mild adult content, the show would still feel appropriate for teenagers and older audiences.

The night I attended included a lively group of South African expats who brought wonderful energy to the room. Oliver seamlessly wove Afrikaans words and cultural references into his stories, always translating them so everyone felt included in the joke. It created an atmosphere where laughter came easily and participation felt comfortable rather than confronting.

One particularly reluctant audience member, reportedly dragged along by his South African wife, slowly transformed from hesitant observer to someone laughing wholeheartedly by the end of the show — a perfect summary of Oliver’s charm.

The 55 minutes fly by. In fact, it feels like the show could easily run another hour without losing momentum.

90 Day Comedian shows that comedy can bring people together while teaching us something along the way.
