At Nexus Arts Venue, audiences were treated to a vibrant musical showcase celebrating the richness of Colombian culture through rhythm, storytelling and striking stagecraft.
With five musicians sharing the stage, the performance delivered a true smorgasbord of Colombian musical traditions. An accomplished backing band carried the show with confidence, weaving together genres such as Cumbia, Bambuco and Bullerengue alongside the familiar pulse of Merengue, Salsa and Bolero. The result was a lively and technically impressive soundscape that highlighted the musicians’ versatility and the depth of the traditions being explored.
Visually, the show was equally striking. The Nexus stage was transformed with an impressive backdrop, thoughtful props and strong staging choices that immediately transported the audience into the performer’s imaginative world. With projections, lighting, and carefully considered props, the production also showcased the remarkable flexibility of the Nexus Arts Venue stage, demonstrating how effectively the space can be transformed to suit each performer’s artistic vision.
The concept draws inspiration from Chía, the Muisca Indigenous goddess of the moon, and leans into surrealist storytelling to explore themes of roots, resilience, multiculturalism and connection.
Performing to a packed house, the lead artist showed confidence and command of the stage, guiding the audience through a personal and symbolic journey. At its best, the show swept viewers into a dreamlike experience of rhythm and emotion.
However, there were moments where the connection between performer and audience felt uneven. For audience members not personally connected to the artist, the narrative thread only became clear midway through the performance. At times, it felt as though half the audience of friends, connections, and work colleagues had been whisked away on a vivid cultural journey, while the rest were still trying to piece the story together.
Text projected onto the backdrop attempted to help guide the audience through the narrative, offering cues about the unfolding story. Yet even with these prompts, the meaning did not always land clearly. Speaking with other audience members afterwards revealed that many of us walked away with entirely different interpretations of what had taken place on stage, a testament perhaps to the show’s surrealist ambitions, but also to the challenge of maintaining a shared narrative thread.
For those with a close connection to Colombian culture or storytelling traditions, the experience will likely resonate deeply. For others, the musicality and visual spectacle remain compelling, even if the narrative occasionally feels just out of reach.
Ultimately, the show offers an ambitious and heartfelt celebration of Colombian heritage, powered by strong musicianship and striking stage design.
