Satire at its most entertaining, Fuccbois will have you in stitches as it irreverently holds a mirror up to F-boy culture
FUCCBOIS: Live in Concert is a satirical comedy‑musical, framed around the final farewell concert of the ‘world’s biggest boyband — the Fuccbois (spawned of reality show Sex-Factor). Despite the best efforts of their long-suffering manager, their superstar egos and backstage drama threatens to tarnish the band’s legacy in its final hour, and hilarity ensues.
The creation of ARIA-award winning writer and performer Bridie Connell (who also features as one of the Fuccbois), the show is high-paced and packs a whole lot of punch into an hour. Encased in a hilarious boyband parody, the show also casts a blisteringly sharp observation on F-boy culture in today’s dating world, while also exploring subplots of rivalry, loyalty, sexual identity and unrequited love. All this, delivered through a banging set list of original songs spanning pop, boyband ballads, with a memorable Irish shanty thrown in for good measure.
The all-female cast playing Fuccbois members ‘Brendan, Brandon, Tyler, Also Brendan’ and their manager Michaela delivered polished performances, with impressive vocals, slick choreography (pelvic thrusts and body rolls in abundance), and respectable accents spanning the British Isles. In a jam-packed hour, they managed to build backstories and subplot for all band members, delivered with flawless comedic characterisation.
The setlist delivered a number of genuinely catchy original numbers, some of which would be sure to secure a following on Spotify. The song lyrics are razor-sharp and witty, casting blistering observations on many aspects of the pitfalls of modern-day dating culture (helpfully the lyrics are shown on the big screen to avoid the jokes being lost in the music). This show will resonate with those who grew up in peak boyband era, bedroom walls adorned with posters of teenage heartthrobs, and will serve as cheap therapy for those deep in the trenches of swipe right culture. And is generally a thoroughly entertaining show for all!
This late in the Fringe season, there is a risk of audience enthusiasm starting to wane. Fuccbois brings a late burst of energy and refreshing humour to the festival. Do yourself a favour, get your girl gang together and catch the Fuccbois “last ever concert” this week.
