The 27 Club, coined by Kurt Cobain’s brother back in 1994, is an ill-fated yet honoured group of musicians who met their untimely demise at, you guessed it, the ripe young age of 27.
Members of the club include Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of The Doors, Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse.
To celebrate these fallen idols, local music legends brought their well-known tracks out for an airing while reminiscing on the fascination society has had with the stars.
Dusty Lee Stephensen on guitar and vocals kicked the night off with Hendrix’s ‘Purple Haze’
The Superjesus’ Sarah McLeod absolutely tore it up taking on Joplin’s hits and Kevin Mitchell (Bob Evans, Jebediah) took on Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
Cabaret singer Carla Lippis belted out Winehouse’s ‘Rehab’ with a powerful delivery.
Set in Gluttony’s ‘The Moa’, the outdoor stadium style stage was the perfect venue for live music. It was like being in a mini arena.
The interludes between songs spoke of how these beloved and beleaguered figures of music rose to fame and how their fall from grace eventuated. Tragic and familiar tales, with little known facts about the stars thrown in which added weight and food for thought.
All the stars remained on stage and took it in turns to pay homage to the greats. It gave a vibe of a jam with a very talented group of friends and the relaxed energy had many singing along to the popular tunes.
For many people, it had been a long time between gigs. But what a way to return to live music. A night under the stars paying tribute to rock’n’roll royalty.
You can see 27 Club at The Moa, Gluttony until Sunday, Feb 28. So get in quick! Buy your tickets HERE.
