In his debut stand-up show Twinky Twinky Little Star, comedian and rising star Zak Vasiliou hilariously unpacks the blissful and baffling naivety of his parents, who somehow missed every sign that he was gay.
“I was belting Defying Gravity on a chair in the living room, believed I was a mermaid, and refused to leave the house without stick on earrings…and yet my parents were shocked when I came out,” Zak says.
Zak soon realised that coming out was just the beginning, because being gay meant being sorted into an endless list of gay categories, such as twink, bear, and wolf.
“I was sorted into the “twink” category when I came out (think Troye Sivan), but as I journey through my late 20s, I am discovering I am more of a “man whose knees crack when he stands up.”
Blending personal storytelling with fast-paced, punchline-packed comedy, Twinky Twinky Little Star isn’t just a coming out story; it’s about what happens after the coming-out confetti settles.
From childhood moments that should have been obvious (such as singing an ABBA megamix in the middle of Rundle Mall) to the absurdity of animal labels in the gay community, Zak mines every moment for comedy gold.
“Not only is this show a guaranteed night of laughter, but it is also educational for those who aren’t part of the gay community, and deeply relatable for those part of it.”
Twinky Twinky Little Star is playing six shows from 21st Feb – 22nd March 2025 at Prompt Creative Centre in the Adelaide CBD as part of the Adelaide Fringe.
