Artificial Intelligence is no substitute for human stupidity – something local comedy favourite Jacob Jackman sets out to prove in his new show debuting this Fringe.
Framed as a live therapy session with the world’s first AI therapist (a program originally designed to aid in tax fraud), Inner Pieces tackles the subject of mental health discourse with equal parts sardonicism and sincerity.
“Why would you go see a therapist when you can just look at your phone?” asks Jacob. “We are truly living in the present.”
The ‘AI Therapist’ takes the form of a crude 3D animation resembling Jacob himself, projected across the glowing scan lines of an antiquated rear projection television set. Conversing with his digital counterpart, Jacob draws deep from his unique life experiences; working in animal crematorium, growing up on an industrial chicken farm, and his family’s history with mental illness.
“I want to emphasise the artifice of artificial intelligence, because ironically, that is the most human part. Humans are flawed, and those flaws permeate everything we touch and create. Stand-up comedy embraces human error more than any art form.”
Combining social satire and personal experience, Jacob draws deep from within to explore what makes us human; guts and all.
