Dial M for Mushroom: a deadly recipe for hilarity at Adelaide Fringe

George Glass return to Adelaide Fringe with two offerings on the menu this year, the newest of which is deliciously topical.

Promising murder, mushrooms and mild legal risk, the hilarious trio are inviting audiences to, “Bring a date — or an estranged family member” to enjoy their comical take on the murder trial that captured the nation, cooked up through courtroom hysteria, musical numbers and a slow descent into mushroom-induced chaos.

The Fringe favourites who self-describe as former supermodels (careers tragically cut short) will present Dial M For Mushrooms in addition to their smash hit success Scientology The Musical — a pairing that appears to challenge both religion and common legal sense.

The group return home following a run at the State Theatre in Perth during Fringe World, where their ‘too-soon’ sensibility found willing audiences.

“Our style is to take very serious topics and treat them with the sort of irreverence usually reserved for an ex-lover. And this one is no exception,” says co-creator Nic Conway. “One nice thing about Dial M For Mushrooms is we probably won’t get sued. I can’t say the same about Scientology. They’re famously litigious. No lawsuits yet — fingers crossed.”

Despite the subject matter — murder trials, exorcisms, organised belief systems — George Glass insist the goal is uncomplicated.

“We’re not here to sell an agenda. We’re here to make people laugh,” they say. “If people leave talking about an onstage exorcism instead of the economy or the weather, that feels like a win.”
