Stalwart of the South Australian children’s entertainment game, Peter Combe, packed out the Corona tent at the Garden of Unearthly Delights over the long weekend with his new show Peter Combe in Live it Up and Fry an Egg on a Slippery Dip!!
It was a colourful affair, the stage set up with a big box of dress-ups before Combe stormed the stage with his keyboardist in tow. Starting off with a few acoustic numbers, he warmed the crowd with his signature quirky style. The Theatre Bugs, a throng of energetic kids, provided cute backup vocals and enthusiastic choreography.
Aimed at a younger demographic of children, Combe’s silly lyrics about monkey’s in teapots and turkey’s in toasters appealed to the packed crowd the laughter was resounding through the large, but stuffy tent.
Combe has been around so long that I could guarantee a few of the parents in the crowd had seem him when they were a kid. This was apparent as his better known tracks came on such as “Newspaper Mama”, “Juicy Juicy Green Grass” and “Spaghetti Bolognaise” were performed.
There was audience participation as well, with all the kids (and adults) being invited onto the stage to join in on a dance and for the final number, the overly familiar “Wash Your Face in Orange Juice” – belly flop in a pizza anyone?
All in all, it was a fun day out for the kids and a nostalgic flashback for those who had jumped up and down with glee back in the 90s to Combe’s evergreen hits.
Peter Combe in Live it Up and Fry an Egg on a Slippery Dip is on at the Corona Theatre in the Garden of Unearthly Delights on March 11, 16 & 17. Get your tickets here.
