Mary’s Poppin was packed this weekend for the sold out drag sensation Season of the Witch.
Star of the show, Wundes, begins as a red poppy, the spotlight shining into their wide eyes.
The music to Judy Garland’s timeless classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” began and unlike many drag shows that lip sync, Wundes sang and had a decent set of pipes.
From there the witching hour was upon us, with costume changes and songs from Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Lana Del Rey and David Bowie. Wundes’ makeup impeccable throughout.
Wundes’ performance is quite original, and you can tell they have crafted their personal style by taking from some of the kookier, at-times darker pop stars of past and present and making it their own. The emotion that comes with Wundes’ voice rather than miming makes their performance that much more powerful.
Wundes pays homage to the influential witches of the past through montages in between sets. From the wicked witch of The Wizard of Oz, to a dancing Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic and even the Charmed sisters (to name a few) witches have permeated pop culture for years and remain a fascinating subject.
Perhaps you’ll experience a bit of magic yourself. Only one way to find out. Season of the Witch has one final show on March 7 at Mary’s Poppin. Get your tickets here before they vanish into thin air.
