Local music mentoring organisation, Girls Rock! Adelaide, have launched a fundraising campaign via crowdfunding platform Pozible to help run their second ever rock camp, now rescheduled for January 2021—and South Australians are showing their support in droves.
The initial fundraising target was set at $2500, but the team has reached almost $6000 and are now aiming for $10,000 by the end of August.
Girls Rock Adelaide! Co-director, Hannah Fairlamb, speaks highly of the local community’s response to the fundraiser.
“From the very start, one of the most rewarding elements of Girls Rock! Adelaide has been seeing the level of support and goodwill from the community,” she says. “Even at a time like this when music and entertainment is really struggling, we are seeing people sharing our Pozible and spending their savings to help us reach our target. It’s not just heartwarming and motivating for us, it’s a real sign of the generosity and altruism of our industry.”
While generosity is certainly key to their success, the committee have also been strategic in offering some very unique rewards for those who pledge—with fabric patches and guitar picks at the lower end, to hoodies, mentoring sessions, personalised songs and even house parties up for grabs. Pledges range from $2 to $1000, making it possible for supporters to pledge at whichever level they can afford.
Girls Rock! Adelaide have also commissioned designs from local artists Ruby Allegra and Daria HK of SICKNASTY for one-time-only tote bags and t-shirts. Daria states that “when Girls Rock! Adelaide got in touch with me about their merch I was super elated. It’s an initiative that I think is so important for this city and its youth and I’m so humbled to be a part of it all!”
So what will the extra money raised go towards? The Girls Rock Adelaide team are hoping to cover venue and transport costs, workshop presenters and facilitators fees, payment for lunchtime performers and, most importantly, scholarships for campers who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend.
“Being able to provide scholarships for young people that want to come along but can’t afford the full fee is really important to us” says Co-Director Sianne Van Abkoude, “We want to make it possible for anyone to come along regardless of their circumstances, which is why we have included the $500 Sponsor a Camper tier.”
“If we get up in the $15,000 mark, we’ll be able to extend these to rural and regional young people and include funds towards travel and accommodation costs—a long time dream of ours,” she adds. “So fingers crossed!”
Girls Rock! Adelaide is a not-for-profit community youth organisation, which uses the medium of music to inspire confidence, encourage creativity, celebrate individuality and ensure opportunity for young female identifying and non-binary people aged 10 – 17.
Their rock camps give teens the opportunity to develop creativity in a safe space led by female and gender diverse musicians and industry practitioners.
