MOVEMENT SCORES TOP PICK FOR UNIQUE SALA PERFORMANCE ARTIST

Using movement and sound in a unique visual artwork for SALA Festival, Sam Burke is set to debut her work as an awards finalist.

Shortlisted for both the UnitCare Services Moving Image Award as well as The Advertiser Tertiary Student Award, Sam Burke’s Movement Score, is an experimental performance art piece, merging motion capture technologies with the corporeal.

“This piece is an experimental performance work engaging with the body as material through the lens of digital technology,” Sam says.

“Presenting the work at new Adelaide venue The Lab has given me the opportunity to explore visual capturing of movement as well as heartbeat, pulse and circulation in real time during performance. The space, technology and atmosphere at the Lab has allowed me to take my practice into new areas and I’m very excited about where this work will lead”.

Inimitable performance artist Burke is currently undertaking her PhD (visual art) at The University of South Australia and has been named is a top pick for this year’s SALA Festival by Director of The Gallery of South Australia’s, Rhana Devenport.

Taking place over two exciting nights at The Lab, which is part of Adelaide’s newest art venue Light, Movement Score dives into the world of the digital, creating visual and sound landscapes in real time.

Generously supported by Apple Australia, Movement Score takes the world of performance art into the experimental digital realm, exploring the materiality of the body in all its luminosity.

“I am thrilled that Apple have come on board with support for this project. It enhances the technical side of the piece and gives me the ability to take my work in performance art to a new and exciting level,” Sam says.
