Australia’s own, national, living treasure, Ernie Dingo announces Adelaide Fringe debut

In fabulous news for Adelaide Fringe and its audiences, Australia’s own national, living treasure, stage and screen royalty Ernie Dingo will make his Fringe debut in 2027 with a new show and art exhibition, Ernie Dingo: Chasing Horizons and Ernie Dingo: Chasing Horizons the Exhibition.

This will be the world premiere of both show and exhibition, with both being exclusive to Adelaide.

Ernie Dingo: Chasing Horizons, the show will play at Gluttony and will debut on the opening weekend with a limited season of three shows across three days.

Across an hour of interactive storytelling, Dingo will sing, act and paint live on stage, inviting the audience into the experience with him.

“I have always wanted to perform at Adelaide Fringe and in creating this show, I felt Fringe was the perfect fit,” Ernie Dingo says. “I also feel excited and humbled that my show is the first to be announced for the 2027 season.”

Adelaide Fringe CEO Marc Carnes says, “Seeing this first event go on sale is an incredibly exciting signal of what’s to come, and having such an iconic Australian as Ernie Dingo leading the way gives everyone a fantastic first glimpse of Adelaide Fringe 2027.”

“As Adelaide Fringe continues to grow its reputation as a must-attend South Australian experience, we are seeing extraordinary artists from Australia and around the world choosing to bring ambitious new work to Adelaide. Ernie’s Fringe debut and world premiere is a great example of the calibre of talent the event is attracting, and it’s excellent to see it kick off with a name so beloved here. There is so much more still to be revealed for 2027.”

Ernie’s passion for the arts runs deep and clearly not slowing down, he has created a 20-piece art exhibition. The collection, Ernie Dingo: Chasing Horizons the Exhibition, will be exhibited at Tandanya and presented by Gluttony.

Chasing Horizons, both the show and art collection, invites audiences into Ernie’s world, where he shares personal stories and truth-telling drawn from a remarkable life across travel, culture, film, television and visual art.

Gluttony co-director Elena Kirschbaum said: “This is a rare opportunity to witness one of Australia’s most recognised and respected cultural figures live on stage and we are delighted to be presenting Ernie’s show at Gluttony’s The Flamingo tent, and exhibition at Gluttony at Tandanya.”

This is the second Adelaide Fringe season that South Australian event company Gluttony has collaborated with Tandanya National Cultural Institute to present a program of First Nations-focused shows. Tandanya, at 253 Grenfell St in the Adelaide CBD, is only a short walk from Gluttony’s Lakeside Gate.

CEO of Tandanya Brenz Saunders said: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Ernie Dingo back to Tandanya and to have his work on our walls once again. This exhibition gives audiences a chance to experience another side of Ernie’s storytelling through his visual art.”

“Our continued collaboration with Gluttony for Adelaide Fringe 2027 is about bringing more people through Tandanya’s doors and creating meaningful opportunities to connect with First Nations artists, stories and culture. Having Ernie as part of that program makes it even more special.”

Rising to fame 50 years ago, this is the first time Ernie Dingo has created a live show of this kind.

The show’s Producer-Director, Anita Baltutis said: “It presents a rare opportunity to experience Ernie in an entirely new format and reveals a lesser-known side of his practice as a visual artist, where painting becomes a way to express his travels, Aboriginal culture, and his enduring connection to people, country, and horizons that have shaped his life”.
